Although well known as being the birthplace of William Shakespeare, the county of Warwickshire has many other famous, historical and sporting associations. There is plenty to interest the visitor young and old and all set in a most picturesque countryside. Literature: Of course there is William Shakespeare, born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 but we also have George Elliot (Mary Ann Evans) born on the Arbury Estate in 1819. She lived at Griff House between Nuneaton and Bedworth until she was 21 years old and her novels 'Scenes of Clerical Life' and 'The Mill on the Floss' were based in Warwickshire Castles and Stately Homes: Warwick Castle has been inhabited since the Middle Ages and is one of the most complete medieval castles in the country. Coughton Court the home of Sir Thomas Throckmorton whose nephew, Robert Catesby, was the chief plotter in the Gunpowder Plot. The magnificent Kenilworth Castle that was built around 1122 had one of only five licensed tournament grounds in England where knights could compete. Other notable buildings include the Lord Leycester Hospital and the Collegiate Church of St Mary with its superb Beauchamp Chapel. But that’s not all; there are plenty of other attractions to visit and things to do for all the family. Why not book a hotel or country cottage and take some time to explore this wonderful county.
