Location and Local Amenities

Swansea Bay is many destinations rolled into one!  The maritime City of Swansea, birthplace of Catherine Zeta Jones and Dylan Thomas, the Victorian seaside resort of Mumbles, the Gower Peninsula and the Waterfalls Country combine into a breathtaking mix of spectacular contrasts, all you need for a fabulous holiday!

The City of Swansea is well known for its vibrant nightlife, consisting of a wide range of clubs, bars and restaurants to suit every age and taste. The Wind Street area has become the modern café quarter by day, and by night, is the liveliest street in the city!

Swansea boasts the largest indoor market in Wales, where you can sample and buy many of our local delicacies such as cockles and laverbread, and of course our traditional Welsh cakes. Locally caught fresh fish can also be bought along with local souvenirs including Welsh ladies, rugby shirts and lovespoons.

The city boasts an award winning Marina and Maritime Quarter, which will be home to the new National Waterfront Museum (opening in Summer 2005), adjacent to Swansea Museum - the oldest museum in Wales.

An iconic Sail Bridge links the Maritime Quarter with the new SA1 Swansea Waterfront Development, an exciting new development located at the East of the City. The Norwegian Church, also on the waterfront, is to become a UK centre for art glass, and in addition, Swansea city is also home to several art galleries.

Swansea will soon be home to a 20,000 seater stadium holding music and sporting events and will also be the home of Swansea City Football Club and the Neath - Swansea Ospreys.

With so many new developments, the City of Swansea will see many exciting changes over the next few years - a ‘must - see’ holiday destination for everyone!
At the end of the 5 mile sweep of Swansea Bay, Mumbles is a Victorian seaside resort full of character and deserving of its name as the ‘Gateway to Gower’.

This quaint village is home to some of the finest restaurants in Swansea, ranging from Italian, American and Mexican to the more traditional Welsh restaurants serving local produce including freshly caught fish and other seafood delicacies. And for desert, Mumbles hosts two of the most talked about ice cream parlours in the region, Joe’s and Verdi’s where one can sit outside and enjoy the spectacular view across the bay. No wonder Swansea-born actress Catherine Zeta Jones and husband Michael Douglas recently built a house on the outskirts of this lovely Victorian resort!

Amongst the small shops in Mumbles you can find local pottery, lovespoons and surf gear or alternatively browse around many of the small art galleries and craft shops that the village has to offer.

Mumbles Pier is also well worth a visit, where there is a café and amusement arcade, or take a trip on the Mumbles land train which runs from Blackpill to Verdi’s - making the trip similar to that of the first passenger railway in the UK, which was located in Swansea.

Why not take a drive up to Bracelet Bay and catch a glimpse of the Mumbles Lighthouse? Built in 1794, it was designed to alert passing ships of the dangerous Mixon Sands and Cherry Stone Rock - two massive undersea sand banks that have caused the destruction of countless ships and taken the lives of hundreds of seamen over the centuries.

With a wide range of places to see and things to do, Mumbles is a great day out for the whole family!
