What a wonderful county – Exmoor, the Brendon Hills, the Quantock Hills, the Mendips are the high spots contrasted by the amazing Somerset Levels which together create a wonderfully varied landscape. The Mendip hills, home to Cheddar Gorge and Wokey Hole Caves are a world apart from the rest of Somerset, with an air about it of mystery and ancient times. The Quantock Hills over to the west side of Somerset, between Taunton and the coast are slightly “tamer” than Exmoor but offer a wonderful landscape for walking and exploring. The National Park of Exmoor in the far north-west of Somerset spreads over the county border into Devon. It is truly beautiful especially in the spring and autumn. The views from all the high spots of Somerset are more than worth the effort of walking to the top. You are rewarded with stunning coastal and countryside views. There is plenty of history to be discovered: from the Arthurian legends of Glastonbury, with its Chalice Well and Tor, the stories of Alfred the Great, the battle of Sedgemoor as well as many castles and hillforts from more ancient times. Another contrast that Somerset has to offer is its cities – Wells is one of the smallest cities in the UK but has a very impressive cathedral. Bath offers a wonderful shopping experience as well as some superb historical buildings including the Roman Baths. There really is too much to mention here – soon, when we can break down the counties into areas, we will provide more local information.
