Housteads Fort |
Northumberland, in the north of England, is a truly beautiful county. There is a magnificent coastline with vast beaches. There are magnificent landmarks both modern and ancient. Inland the National Park boasts beauty beyond compare. The county is steeped in history, legend and folklore and the magic of this ancient land can still be felt today. Castles and Ancient Buildings There are many castles and ancient buildings worth exploring, too many to mention here. Just two for tasters – Alnwick Castle, home of the Duke of Northumberland originates from the 11th century and houses a superb collection of paintings, ceramics and furniture. It also has a Capability Brown landscape to give it the perfect setting. There is also Bamburg Castle – a very popular visitor destination – probably due to its coastal location. It is perched on a rocky outcrop and hoses collections of china and glass, tapestries and furniture and it also has a museum of industrial archaeology of the 19th century. Museums and Art Galleries You will find both contemporary and traditional museums and art galleries throughout Northumberland. If you are near Newcastle, you should visit the “Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art” – this is a state of the art gallery leading the way in exhibiting contemporary art. The exhibitions are constantly changing and evolving, ensuring that return visits will delight you every time. Other museums and art galleries worth a visit definitely include: Preston Hall Museum in Stockton (one for the kids); the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle (inside a French replica chateau); Hartlepool Art Gallery (housed in a gothic revival church); the Discovery Museum in Newcastle….but there are many others. If you have been to one that you would recommend to visitors, let us know and we’ll add it here. History Every county has its story of historical importance, but Northumberland does seem to have a bit to boast about. There are Roman remains all over the place – most notably of course is the mile upon mile of Hadrian’s Wall; the superb Housteads Fort and Vindolanda Temple. Pop across to the Holy Island to see the incredible Lindisfarne Priory. And if you want to see a truly magnificent cathedral – go to Durham. Make the effort to climb the stairs to the top – the view is incredible. Wild and Woolly Northumberland This unique county offers thousands of years of history and out in the open countryside you can see glimpses form many ages in history, mixed in with a wild and embracing atmosphere. The Northumberland National Park (400 square miles of it) preserves this amazing landscape and makes it accessible to visitors of all ages to come and enjoy. There are many rare habitats home to even rarer species – if you are quiet and take the time you may glimpse red squirrels and many other wonderful creatures. Come and see for yourself There is simply too much to put on this single page. We haven’t even mentioned the cities! Why not visit Northumberland and see for yourself. There is holiday accommodation of all types from hotels, bed and breakfasts, cottages, holiday parks and campsites to city apartments and flats.
