Man has inhabited this area for thousands of years, yet to this day it remains relatively unspoilt. There is evidence of man's inhabitancy throughout these times to be discovered at every turn. In particular the roman remains in towns such as Autun, built as a "new town" 2000 years ago to replace the ancient Gaulish town of Bibracte; now an amazing archaeological site and museum open to visitors. Tourism Today: Throughout the region there are numerous tourist attractions (many of them offer English language translations or speak English). There are castles and chateaus, abbeys and ancient churches, caves and archaeological sites, river gorges and hilltop towns, wine routes and wine tasting "caves" and much much more. Places to visit: Bibracte Museum and ancient Gaulish town; Autun (Roman town - plenty of architecture still visible); Caves "Grottes d'Arcy" in the Yonne; Vézelay - ancient hilltop town (UNESCO) with basilica dedicated to the Mary Magdalene, whose relics can be seen there - also one of the main starting points for the pilgrimage route of the "Way of St James" to Santiago de Compostela in Spain; Les Fontaines Salees at St. Pere; there is so much more. Capital: Nevers Geography: Primarily, very rural - plenty of forest (Morvan Regional Parc) and lakes, hills; easy driving country. Food and Drink: Nièvre area information Ancient History: The area is steeped in history and legend (as is most of France in one way or another!) There are numerous small towns that offer plenty for the historical traveller, with buildings dating from 11th and 12th century upwards. Tourism Today: The Burgundy area is renowned for tourism. It is famous worldwide for it's wine and history. You will never be short of places to visit, things to see and do. The entire regions caters well for tourists, many centres, attractions etc speak English. There are castles, chateau, ancient abbeys and churches, river gorges, swimming and fishing lakes, cycle routes, fabulous walking routes, and much much more. Places to visit: Magny Cours (racing circuit); La Charité-sur-Loire (UNESCO heritage site); Pouilly-sur-Loire (Pouilly Fumé wine); Chateau Chinon - hilltop town and historic Capital of the Morvan;
