HOLIDAY PARKS AND CAMPING

Berkshire is the Royal County of England where Windsor Castle is the most notable building, home of the Queen and the Royal Family. The main towns of the county are Bracknell, Maidenhead, Reading, Slough, Windsor and Wokingham.

Berkshire is a good base for a holiday within easy reach of so many interesting places to visit and things to do. It is only a short drive into the capital city of London and it is bordered by the counties of Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Wiltshire.

The River Thames winds its way right through the county and it makes for an excellent route to discover the county’s towns and villages. You will discover historic buildings such as Highclere Castle home of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who uncovered the tomb of Tutankhamen in the 1920’s; The Stanley Spencer Gallery in the village of Cookham; The Palladian mansion of Basildon Park with its notable interior and Cliveden, a fantastic estate overlooking the Thames with a series of gardens, miles of woodland and riverside walks.

There are theatres and cinemas and many other places of entertainment including the Newbury Corn Exchange and The Watermill (in Bangor near Newbury), which is one of the most innovative theatres in the country.

There are endless places to enjoy the outdoors, whether walking, cycling on horseback or on a barge – the Ridgeway and the Kennet and Avon Canal are both excellent choices to spend a peaceful and relaxing time in the countryside. There are nature parks galore including Dinton Pastures Country Park and Wellington Country Park.

If you have children, they would enjoy a visit to Odds Farm Park where they can discover all sorts of farm animals with plenty of hands-on activities.

You will find watersports activities on the county’s lakes and rivers offering excellent facilities, as well as plenty of fishing opportunities.

Whatever your choice of activity you won’t get bored in Berkshire. All you need to do now is chose the best type of holiday accommodation to suit your needs, perhaps a quaint country holiday cottage or one of Berkshires many hotels and guesthouses. Or if you really like the outdoors you may prefer to try out one of the county’s holiday parks or campsites.
